Terracotta keeps sugar dry: the porous clay regulates moisture, stopping it from forming that solid block that never breaks apart again. The same logic as a garlic keeper: terracotta preserves better than any plastic.
 

 
Handmade by Maurizio in Altomonte. The shape is simple, with a lid that stays in place. The small variations in the glaze are what you get from an object made without molds.
