Maurizio's water whistle is the kind you fill halfway and then blow. Water inside, sound outside: a liquid, natural sound that changes depending on how much water is in it.
 
In Calabria, potters used to make terracotta whistles for children. They were toys, but also a test of skill: the shape matters, the opening matters, the thickness of the clay matters. It's not as simple as it looks.
 
This one is handmade by Maurizio in his workshop. Each whistle is slightly different from the next, and the sound changes accordingly. That's what makes it special.
 
Add water and blow gently. It takes a minute to work out how it works – then you won't want to stop.
