The lucky horn is the oldest symbol of the South. There isn't a Calabrian home without one: on the door, in the kitchen, on the bathroom mirror. It's always been there, and no one questions it.
 
 
 
This one is handmade by Maurizio in Altomonte, in terracotta. The shape is the classic one: elongated, pointed, red. The color is painted by hand before firing, so it's part of the piece, not sitting on top like a layer of paint.
 
 
 
Terracotta gives the horn a different weight than plastic, a different presence than glass. You feel it in your hand. You notice it on the wall.
 
 
 
It's hung on the front door, in the kitchen, anywhere you want to keep something good close by.
 
 
 
An object that needs no explanation. In Calabria, everyone has always known it.
