The terracotta pigna is the symbol of Calabria on the houses. You see it on rooftops, on gates, on doors: it's not just a shape, it's a wish. In Calabria the pine cone brings luck, fertility, abundance. It was placed outside to welcome and to keep evil away.
 
 
 
This one is handmade by Maurizio in Altomonte. The clay is worked on the wheel, the glaze applied by hand. The small imperfections on the surface, the variations in the glaze: these are the marks of an object made without molds, one at a time.
 
 
 
It's placed outside on the door, on the windowsill, on the terrace. Or inside, in a corner of the house, because it carries something with it.
 
 
 
A symbol that needs no explanation. Anyone who knows Calabria recognizes it at once.
