There's something precise about the pink of this piglet. It isn't pastel pink or souvenir-shelf pink: it's Maurizio's glaze, coming out of the kiln with a warm, slightly matt tone and shades that vary from piece to piece, because clay and kiln never do exactly the same thing twice. It's a colour you notice, with a clear presence on the table, yet never out of place, because it comes from hands that know what they're doing.
Maurizio makes it in Altomonte, in the province of Cosenza, with clay from the Calabrian hills. On the wheel, piece by piece, with the snout and ears shaped by hand before firing. Each one is slightly different: the ears aren't identical, the weight varies by a few grams, the shade of pink changes. These are the marks of craftsmanship that set a handmade object apart from one stamped out of an industrial mould.
It works like every 'nduja warmer: the candle goes in the base, heating from below, and the terracotta carries that heat evenly to the jar of 'nduja (a spicy spreadable Calabrian salami). In ten minutes the 'nduja softens and turns creamy, warming to the temperature where it really releases its aroma and the Calabrian chilli opens up as it should. It spreads on bread effortlessly, melts on bruschetta, and brings to the table a ritual that existed in Calabria long before anyone thought to write a product description about it.
Its pink makes it the most recognisable piglet in the range. It's the one you spot first on the table, the one people who don't know 'nduja warmers notice and want to understand. It's also the most immediate gift for anyone who loves cooking and appreciates an object with character: not serious like the classic model or understated like the brown one, but something different, with a touch of irony and plenty of substance.
In Calabria the pig has always had a special place in home life. It was the animal kept in the yard, the one families relied on for winter, the source of 'nduja, lard and soppressata. Having it on the table in terracotta, with 'nduja slowly warming inside, is a way of keeping that world close without heavy nostalgia: a practical gesture with a story behind it, a story that needs no explaining to anyone from the South.
For anyone not from the South, it's the best way to start understanding. Put it on the table, light the candle, wait. When the 'nduja is ready and its aroma has filled the room, nothing more needs saying.
