The piglet 'nduja warmer is the one that arrives at the table and lifts the mood of the evening. Not because it does anything different from the others: the candle is still underneath, the 'nduja (a soft, spicy spreadable salami) warms the same way, the bread waits where it always has. But it has ears, a little snout and the shape of a miniature pig – which in Calabria was never just a farmyard animal: it was the heart of the household economy, the source of everything, including the 'nduja inside it.
Maurizio makes it by hand in Altomonte, with clay from the hills of the province of Cosenza. This one has the little flower decoration: small flowers painted on the surface before firing, with the same gesture Maurizio uses on other pieces in his workshop. It's not a detail added to make it prettier: it's part of how it's made, goes into the kiln with it and comes out with the colours fired into the clay. From piece to piece the flowers shift slightly and the brushstrokes vary by a few millimetres – the marks of handwork that is never exactly repeated.
It works just like the classic 'nduja warmer: a terracotta base, space for a candle, a place for the jar of 'nduja. The candle warms from below, the terracotta spreads the heat evenly, and in ten minutes the 'nduja turns creamy and soft, ready to spread on bread with no resistance. The aroma that rises is the one you'd smell in Calabrian kitchens of old – the one you never forget once you've smelled it.
But the piglet brings something the classic model doesn't: personality. People seeing it on the table for the first time smile. Not because it's silly in a childish way, but because it's ironic in just the right way: a pig-shaped object for warming a product that comes from the pig. That's no accident. In Calabria, this kind of quiet humour is part of people's character: serious things are done without taking yourself too seriously.
It's also the right gift for people who are hard to please. For those who have everything, or almost. For those who love cooking and appreciate something with a story, a precise place of origin and someone's hands behind it. For those from the South who recognise straight away what they're looking at. For those who aren't, and are about to find out.
On the table at home, with 'nduja inside and the candle lit, Maurizio's little-flower piglet does what it's meant to do: it warms, it fills the room with aroma, and it brings an age-old ritual to the table with unexpected character. It's not a decoration for the shelf: it's an object you use, set in the middle of the table, part of dinner from the first moment to the last crostino.
