In Calabria fruit doesn't end the meal: it accompanies it. It arrives on the table during the main course, gets eaten between one bite and another, stays at the center until it's gone. It isn't a separate moment, it's part of the table's rhythm. The cream terracotta fruit plate with little flowers was made for that rhythm. It's the right size for a pear, for a ripe fig, for a slice of August watermelon, for a simple dessert that doesn't need much space but wants its own dignified place on the table.
 

 
Maurizio makes it in Altomonte, in the province of Cosenza. The same clay from the Calabrian hills, the same hands. It's the smallest of the three plates in the line, but no less carefully made: the shape is well proportioned, the rim is well defined, the base is flat just enough to hold what's placed on it without letting it slide off.
 

 
The fruit plate is the kind that has disappeared from many tables now that people stopped eating slowly. Now that fruit has become something eaten standing in front of the fridge, instead of sitting down calmly after lunch. Having it on the table is a way of remembering that a simpler moment still exists before getting up.
 

 
In terracotta this plate has a weight in the hand you notice right away. It isn't light like industrial ceramic: it has the solidity of things made with real materials, worked by hand, fired in the kiln for as long as they need. The cream base is the one it's always been, the natural color of the clay with Maurizio's light glaze, which with years of use becomes even more beautiful as it softens, takes on a patina, becomes part of the story of the kitchen it belongs to.
